Abstract:   (110 Views)
Intermittent fasting in Islam, particularly, has significant positive effects on metabolism, immune system, and physical health that can be crucial for ship crew members during long-term maritime missions. Calorie restriction and alterations in eating schedules resulting from intermittent fasting can strengthen the immune system, increase lifespan, reduce the risk of autoimmune diseases, and prevent the development of cancers. The World Health Organization emphasizes the importance of spirituality in health, and intermittent fasting can be considered a spiritual aspect as well as a health strategy. The fasting process, by stimulating the innate and adaptive immune system through autophagy and activation of stem cells, leads to the production of new immune cells and improved immune responses. This can be very important for ship crews who are exposed to harsh environmental conditions and stresses from maritime missions. By stimulating glucose and fat metabolism, autophagy is activated, which clears abnormal cells and strengthens stem cell and immune system regeneration. Studies have shown that fasting reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines and suppresses cytokine storms, which leads to reduced inflammation, improved immune health, enhanced immune responses, and a decreased risk of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. These benefits can help maintain the health and optimal performance of ship crew members during long-term missions. Therefore, intermittent fasting, as a low-cost and accessible strategy, can have broad benefits in improving health and preventing diseases for ship crew members.
