A review of the status of microplastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems and surface soil resources of Iran

Plastic pollution in the environment has emerged in various forms such as macroplastics, mesoplastics, microplastics and nanoplastics. The progress of industry and modern life today has led to the production of many plastic and synthetic items and equipment that humans use abundantly in different parts of life. This descriptive-cross-sectional study was conducted in 2025 using articles and research by other researchers and 12 articles by the author on environmental pollution, plastics and microplastics. Based on the available data extraction, researchers reported the microplastics present in soil samples from different regions of Iran and water, aquatic animals, fish and sediments of rivers, the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea. In various and numerous studies, various numbers, shapes and colors of microplastics were determined in sediment and soil samples. The differences in the abundance and number of microplastics, the type of polymer, their color and shape were different in different studies, which indicate the lack of a standard procedure for sampling, identification and measurement of the number of microplastics. Also, given the lack of modern technologies, the difficulty and complexity of removing microplastics from nature, their entry into the environment should be prevented and replaced with bioplastics, which include bio-based plastics and biodegradable plastics. Given the limited studies of microplastics in surface soils, sampling and identification in these ecosystems seems to be more complicated, but it is recommended that more research be conducted in this field.
